Discussion-Based Assessments (DBAs)
Talking Through Learning
Discussion-based Assessments (DBAs) are one-on-one conversations between a student and their teacher that bring learning to life in a different way. Instead of a traditional test, DBAs give students the chance to explain what they’ve learned, ask questions, and deepen their understanding in a supportive, interactive setting.
“I always say DBA stands for 'Don't Be Afraid,' because it's honestly just a really nice, chill conversation with your teacher. DBAs are so easy when you put the time and effort in.”
-Fatima Khan, Florida Virtual High School, Class of 2026
Why DBAs Matter
Think of it as your chance to shine and grow.
DBAs help students deepen their understanding, strengthen their communication skills, and receive personalized support tailored to their needs. They also help ensure academic integrity by confirming that students are doing their own work and can clearly explain what they’ve learned.
Format:
- Usually 10-20 minutes long
- Conducted by phone or Zoom
- Scheduled in advance or during designated office hours
- Conversational
DBAs help students:
- Show What They Know: Share understanding in their own words
- Get Instant Feedback: Clear up misconceptions right away
- Build Confidence: Practice explaining concepts out loud
- Strengthen Skills: Improve speaking, listening, and critical thinking
- Receive Personalized Support: Teachers adjust follow-up help to fit each learner
Research shows that talking through concepts helps students retain information longer and apply it more effectively in new situations.
When to Expect a DBA
No surprises, here’s when they happen and how they work:
- Required for all core courses and electives
- Must be completed before moving to the next module
- Cameras are optional unless required by your teacher
- Schedule via phone, text, email, or your teacher’s online scheduler
- Limit: one DBA per day
- Must be completed independently, without outside help
Preparing for a DBA
Preparation is the key to a confident conversation:
- Complete all required assignments before the DBA
- Find a quiet space with minimal distractions
- Organize your notes and study materials
- Review key concepts from lessons and resources
- Check the DBA rubric (if available)
- Practice explaining concepts out loud
- Bring questions for your teacher
- Stay calm - it’s a conversation, not an interrogation
During the DBA
This is your time to shine and show what you know:
- Be honest if you don’t understand something
- Ask questions to clarify concepts
- Be prepared to explain the material in your own words
After the DBA
Your DBA is the bridge to your next step:
- Get the exam password from your teacher
- Take the module exam knowing you’re prepared
Camera Usage Expectations
To create an engaging and respectful learning environment:
- Students may be asked to keep cameras for participation and accountability.
- Instructors may request cameras off during certain activities to reduce distractions or preserve bandwidth.
- Students should be in a quiet, distraction-free space and use a device that supports video conferencing.
